2004 Family Literacy Day Reviews

Nov. 6th, 2004 - Family Literacy Day was a hit with Lewis and Clark as storytellers, fun bike and tent giveaways, and free books for all!

CCLC Sequim Family Literacy Day

The children’s section of the Sequim Library was buzzing with extra activity on Saturday, November 6th. The library hosted the annual Family Literacy Day event put on by the Clallam County Literacy Council for the families in the Sequim area. Volunteers from the Literacy Council and Americorps helped with the activities.

The theme for this year’s event was Reading is a Voyage of Discovery. The Sequim Gazette provided an insert in the November 3rd paper supporting the event. Approximately 100 people participated during the two hours of festivities, which included story sharing, free books, prizes, and treats. Every child took home the memory of a fun reading and library experience, along with a new book, bookmark, prize and treat bag.

Port Angeles Library Opens Doors to Young Explorers

Three cheers for the Clallam County Literacy Council! Saturday morning November 6th was Family Literacy Day and more than sixty PA youngsters (plus we let their parents come, too) joined the Lewis and Clark expedition. Since it is 2004, the exploration was geared to discovering new books, revisiting old favorites, and sharing in the joys of reading.

Volunteers from the Literacy Council, Roosevelt Middle School Honor Society, Americorps, and the PAHS Key Club were dressed as explorers (mostly of the Northwest variety). They helped with:

  • Decorating – lots of balloons

  • Distributing the prizes – in addition to a book to take home, everyone won a prize

  • Sharing – hmmm, there’s nothing as tasty on the trail as goldfish, grapes & M&Ms ☺

  • Reading – everyone picked a favorite book

  • Listening – lots of little one’s shared their reading skills

  • Joining – a good time to sign up for a library card!

Thanks to everyone for coming to the party.
Mark your calendars for next year’s event!
Family Literacy Day is the first Saturday in November

Be sure to say a special THANK YOU to Pam and Colleen the PA librarians who make every visit to the library a fun adventure.
